There’s no magic length. It depends on the topic, the intent, and the competition. Here’s a framework.
Match Intent
- Simple answer — “How long does X take?” 300–500 words. Direct answer. No fluff.
- Comprehensive guide — “Complete guide to X.” 1500–3000 words. Cover the topic.
- Comparison — “X vs. Y.” 800–1000 words. Enough to compare meaningfully.
Check Competition
- What’s ranking? — Look at the top 10. Are they 500 words or 3000? Match or exceed the depth of the best.
- Featured snippet — Often goes to concise, direct answers. 2–4 paragraphs. Structure matters.
Quality Over Length
- Don’t pad — 2000 words of filler hurts. 800 words of value wins.
- Cover the topic — Answer the question. Address related questions. Internal link to commercial pages.
- Update — Refresh annually. Add new sections. Update stats. “Last updated” dates help.
